Can you believe it?! 2024 is literally halfway over.
It's insane to believe that we've experienced 6 months of some of the best music we've had in an entire year that spans across generations and pushes boundaries of what's possible within music today. From an amazing album like ‘empathogen’ by Willow Smith to literal pop bangers like Hit me hard and soft by Billie eilish and most recently ‘Brat’ by Charli XCX to deep, emotive, and nuanced Indie-pop/jazz fusion records like Submarine by The Marias, I'm curious as to what else this year has in store for us music lovers.
Ma’at is no stranger to the soulful and melodic side of things in the local music scene as they’ve been ripping gigs from the world-renowned AfroPunk festival to the Brooklyn Music Kitchen, their home base Otter House Studios and everywhere in between. This new single thrusts the band in familiar soundscapes but yet somehow feels fresh and new. Off the first listen, I get instant ‘OK Computer’ Radiohead vibes. Vocalist Mikki uses her voice to bring sunlight to accompany the dark synths. Once the guitars, bass and drums help the song explode, the lyrics become the vehicle of emotion throughout. ’’As You is a song about allowing yourself to call back on your power and rise regardless of who and what has done you wrong. As always, it's meant to resonate, provide a sense of confidence, and bring out your resilience’’ Mikki writes. Guitarist/Engineer/Producer Frank Santiago also writes ‘ the song is about the process of outgrowing friends, family and hometowns’ - Something we can all relate to as we grow through the stages of life.
‘As You’ is out now on all platforms. Be sure to follow the band on Instagram and catch them at a show near you!
